New business strategy starts to pay off

Industrial Solar GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of Industrial Solar Holding Europe AB, was formerly mostly known for its LF-11 Fresnel Collector for industrial process heat applications. Over the last years, however, the company has broadened its technology portfolio and has developed into a leading turnkey provider for customised renewable energy solutions, both on a national and an international level. Industrial Solar’s latest additions of technologies such as photovoltaic carports and non-concentrating solar thermal solutions now also start to pay off.

Industrial Solar GmbH is a turnkey provider from Freiburg/Germany that initially focused mainly on solutions based on its LF-11 Fresnel Collector – a linear concentrating, solar thermal collector optimized for industrial applications that can provide heat at up to 400°C in the single and lower double-digit megawatt range. Over the last years, the company included more services and technologies in its portfolio in order to meet the various demands of its customers in industry and to be able to offer solutions also to the national market and to regions with lower direct solar irradiation.

Of special relevance is the development of sector-coupling or power-to-heat-coupling systems for industrial customers. The integration of photovoltaic systems into solar thermal systems by means of heat pumps or resistance heating enhances economics, optimizes the usage of ground and rooftop area and increases the flexibility and reliability of renewable energy solutions.

With the advent of COVID-19 and the associated restrictions, international project business has come to almost a halt for many companies, so also for Industrial Solar whose plants are mainly implemented outside Europe in countries with a high direct solar irradiance like Jordan and South Africa. Despite the restrictions to conduct international business, the adapted portfolio allows Industrial Solar to operate on a national level. Two new sales representatives were hired in November 2020 to address the national market.

This action already shows first positive results: Industrial Solar GmbH has just signed its first order of about € 35,000 for the installation of a PV system close to its head office. Further steps to expand the national business are already being taken, one of them being the upcoming smart heat grid market, for which Industrial Solar has an excellent expertise and is well positioned.

With the progress of Covid-19 vaccination campaigns and the waning of the pandemic crisis combined with the activities and funds to mitigate climate change, we expect an uptake of our international project business within this year.

Industrial Solar, CSP Services and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) join efforts in Artificial Intelligence project AuSeSol

The AuSeSol project aims to integrate Artificial Intelligence in Solar Thermal Heating and Power Generation and introduce autonomous monitoring and operation. While solar technologies are already proven and applied, integrating artificial intelligence in the system’s operation and monitoring offers substantial potential for autonomy and efficiency optimization. The project partners cooperate in a five-month project financed by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety to construct a technical proposal that provides the blueprint to the development stage in AuSeSol 2.

Concentrating solar thermal technologies contribute significantly in achieving a carbon neutral process heating and power generation. The operation of concentrating solar thermal collectors depends on comprehensive data collection and evaluation. Artificial Intelligence methods enable the system operator to perform condition monitoring by harnessing the Big Data from the installed sensors and applying deep learning methodologies to detect faults and apply proactive measures such as predictive preventive maintenance. Moreover, deep learning predictive models allow the operation control algorithm to interactively react to the system’s conditions and teach itself the most optimal approaches. As a result, the operations’ inefficiencies and uncertainties will be reduced which leads to bigger energy yields, more reliability and availability, and less human errors.

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is the national aeronautics and space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, energy, transport, security, and digitalisation is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures.

CSP Services is a private engineering and testing company founded in 2007 as spin-off of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). CSP Services counts on a team of more than 25 renown experts and engineers in the field of solar power technologies and operates from two service centers in Cologne (Germany) and Almería (Spain) on solar projects worldwide.

Within the five-month project AuSeSol, the partners develop and evaluate different concepts with the objective to realize the most promising ones in a subsequent research and demonstration project. The AuSeSol project is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. Industrial Solar will receive support of about 32.000 € with a funding rate of 50%.

Life Cycle Analysis by Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute proves Industrial Solar’s LF-11 Fresnel Collector as environmentally friendly heat source for Climeworks direct air capture technology

Within the frame of the Swiss case study of Horizon 2020 ACT project ELEGANCY – Enabling a low-carbon economy via hydrogen and CCS (, researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) conducted a Life Cycle Analysis of Industrial Solar’s LF-11 Fresnel Collector. The impressive results prove the unique collector design of Industrial Solar to be an outstanding environmentally friendly heat generation technology that can support the scale up of solutions like Climeworks’ direct air capture.

Beside renewable energy technologies, direct air capture and storage (DACS) is one of the technological solutions that remove CO2 emissions from the air (carbon dioxide removal) and that may contribute to keeping the rise in global average temperature within the limits of the Paris Agreement. Carbon dioxide removal might become a major mean of achieving net negative emissions and reducing the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Despite the importance of carbon dioxide removal, there has been a large disconnect between policy ambitions, technology readiness and industrial uptake. ELEGANCY will fast-track the deployment of carbon dioxide removal in Europe and worldwide by providing innovative and cutting-edge solutions to key technical challenges for CO2 transport, injection and storage, as well as H2 - CO2 separation.

One of the partners of the consortium of the ELEGANY project is Climeworks, a company that develops, builds and operates direct air capture (DAC) machines that remove CO2 from the air. The air-captured CO2 can either be recycled and used as a raw material, or completely removed from the air by safely storing it.

Since Climeworks’ DAC machines require heat at temperatures of around 100 C° to regenerate the adsorbent, researchers in the Technology Assessment Group at PSI conducted a detailed life cycle analysis (LCA) of different heat sources and their respective impact on climate and environment with the aim to find a suitable and eco-friendly heat source to operate these DAC  machines. The LCA results show that Industrial Solar’s Fresnel technology at various locations in the Middle East, Chile, or Southern Europe performs best in most environmental impact categories compared to heat from impact-intensive hard coal or oil furnaces, but also state-of-the-art natural gas boilers and even wood chips furnaces. Absolute impacts on the environment are very low per MJ heat produced. Thus, making use of solar energy via this plant is a well-suited system to generate heat in an environmentally friendly way, e.g. to be used in a combined Fresnel – solar photovoltaics – DAC design. A scientific publication is currently being written which will show the calculations, assumptions, and detailed results.

Industrial Solar expands its sales network through cooperation with strategic partners

Strong cooperation with partners in target markets and sectors are a core element of the sales strategy of Industrial Solar. Recently, the company has signed new agreements which strengthen its position in the market.

The core markets of Industrial Solar, a turnkey provider for solar thermal energy systems, are the Middle East, North Africa, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. In these locations, the direct solar irradiation is optimal for concentrating as well as for non-concentrating solar technologies to provide process heating. As maximum solar radiation usually occurs when cooling is needed most, process heat can also be used to operate absorption chillers which can shave peak cooling loads. This is an important additional benefit for industrial customers in those regions.

The sectors that have a huge thermal energy demand and are therefore the most promising customers of Industrial Solar are Chemicals & Refining, Pulp & Paper as well as Food & Beverage. In order to accelerate the project development with potential clients, the company reinforces its presence through strategic partnerships, enhancing its presence in the target regions.

During the last weeks, several further cooperation agreements have been signed, for example with:

  • Solar Oilfield Solutions, a company specifically addressing solar energy in the oil and gas industry
  • Netito Trading, a company based in Ethiopia, addressing the East-African market
  • H1 Technology, a company based in Brazil

The selection of cooperation partners goes beyond pure sales activities and specifically considers the ability of participation in project implementation which increases the competitiveness of the company’s solutions and reinforces its capability to create local value.

Further cooperation agreements are under negotiation and first results are already expected within this year.

Innovative and cost-efficient solution for rooftop integration of Fresnel solar collectors

Industrial Solar launches a new version of its LF-11 Fresnel collector that reduces both costs and weight of the substructure by up to 50%. The new feature uses integrated lightweight platform walkways along the collector structure, permitting integration onto uneven roofs.

When it comes to the implementation of a solar energy system in industry, the area available is often the main constraint. Industrial Solar was one of the first companies to install concentrating solar process heat systems onto rooftops. This allows customers to preserve the constrained ground space for potential upcoming expansions.

For inclined roofs, high efforts for substructure and grating were necessary in the past. With the new feature, Industrial Solar further simplified the building-integration of its Fresnel solar concentrators: Industrial Solar developed a design that integrates lightweight and cost-efficient walkways and gratings directly into the structure of the LF-11 Fresnel collector. The number of interfaces to the customer’s roof is thereby further reduced, while weight and cost can be minimized. The walkways consist of stiff and lightweight sheet metal platforms with an anti-slip surface. Different configurations are available, depending on specific site conditions and solar field sizes. Handrails, skirting and further add-ons can be integrated as well. Typically, both cost and weight of the required substructure can thus be reduced by up to 50%.

With this new development Industrial Solar further reduces cost and eases the integration of its concentrating solar collectors on industrial rooftops, which enables the company to tap the huge market potential of carbon-neutral heat for industry.

Higher efficiency at lower costs - Industrial Solar’s LF-11 Fresnel collector cracks the mark of 70% optical efficiency

The engineers of Industrial Solar are constantly working on their Fresnel collector design to increase efficiency and to bring down cost. A raytracing study by Fraunhofer ISE proved that they were successful as the optical efficiency reached the 70% mark.

The LF-11 Fresnel collector from Industrial Solar was one of the first concentrating solar collectors to be designed for process heat generation and suitable to be installed on rooftops. Since 2008, Industrial Solar has successfully implemented LF-11 systems in seven different countries and various industrial sectors to provide solar process heat, cooling and direct steam generation.

The LF-11 Fresnel collector is the flagship of the company’s technology portfolio and can generate temperatures up to 400 °C in a power range up to 30 MW, which meets the thermal energy demand of many industries.

The latest version of Industrial Solar’s LF-11 Fresnel collector was upgraded regarding the width of the individual mirror rows as well as the maximum string length. Accordingly, the optical efficiency for perpendicular incidence eta0 increased by 5,1% from 63,5% to 68,6% in comparison to the previous collector version.

The maximum optical efficiency - which is reached at a transversal incidence angle of 5° - has now cracked the 70% limit with a value of 70,9%. These values were confirmed in a raytracing study performed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg.

The collector technology has been constantly improved and refined over the years, but these latest design changes are considered a major milestone. The improvements were made without increasing the collector footprint, which means that the customers will obtain a higher yield for the same ground use at an even lower price.

Additionally, the standard vacuum receiver from the CSP sector, which is a core component of the collector, has been improved in the last years, having now a shorter glass-metal-seal and better optical and thermal properties. Another improvement of the collector installation is the increased string length that was optimized for 24 modules using only a single drive in each mirror row, which reduces costs and installation time.

Innovation is central to Industrial Solar, which can be seen in the company’s engagement in various R&D projects on both European and national levels.
