Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Solar Technologies


The need for an increase of efficiency and a decrease of emissions in industry requires the combination of different technologies to achieve 100% security of supply at minimal cost and minimal emissions.

To meet these requirements technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) will play an important role.

 In a first phase we will apply AI and ML to our Concentrating Solar Heat (CSH) systems for industrial process applications.


Your tasks:

  • Collaboration in a consortium with research institutions and companies for the development of a detailed proposal for a public funded R&D project on AI and ML applied to CSH systems
  • Integration of AI and ML into the control and monitoring systems of our CSH systems
  • Visualization and evaluation of existing measurement data


Your profile:

  • Degree in computer science, information technology, mathematics, physics, industrial engineering or similar
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Experience with the implementation of AI and ML in industrial PLC systems (Siemens)
  • Good knowledge of CSS, HTML, Python, Plotly Dash

Master Thesis: Optimization and further development of substructure for Fresnel collector systems with direct steam generation

Goals of the thesis:

The main goal of this thesis is to develop a reliable and innovative substructure with low material usage for line focusing solar concentrators based on earlier versions.

The following subtasks are envisioned:

  • Understanding the existing substructure systems and previously developed approaches
  • Enhancing the existing substructure and development of new designs
  • Analysing and evaluating the new solutions from a technical and economical point of view
  • Creating a target specification sheet and decision matrix

Your qualifications:

  • Bachelor Degree in civil engineering or similar
  • Experience with structural design, statics and system building
  • High willingness to develop innovative ideas
  • Material and product knowledge are an advantage
  • Independent work is required
  • A very good command of written and spoken English (German is a plus, but not required)
